Library Cards FAQ:
How does an adult get a library card?
A patron who is 18 years of age or older may either visit the library and apply for a permanent card or apply online for a temporary card and then visit the library to upgrade to a permanent card. A permanent card will be issued after the patron presents an acceptable form of identification and fills out and signs an application form.
How does a child get a library card?
A child may apply for a library card on or after their 3rd birthday. If the child is under 16, a parent or legal guardian must visit the library, fill out and sign an application form, and present an acceptable form of identification. If the child is 16 or 17, they may either visit the library to apply for a permanent card or apply online for a temporary card and then visit the library to upgrade to a permanent card. What forms of identification are acceptable when applying for a library card?
Acceptable forms of identification include a valid driver’s license, a Pennsylvania State ID card, a utility bill or receipt, imprinted checks, a lease agreement, etc. The patron's current name and address must appear on the identification.
How does the library protect my confidential information?
Moon Township Public Library safeguards access to patron library records and restricts access to that information in accordance with our Confidentiality of Library Patron Records Policy. Patrons aged 18 and over may grant a limited waiver of confidentiality in order to allow individuals that they specify to represent their interests with regard to checked out, reserved, and overdue materials.
Do I have to pay for my library card?
The following people are eligible for a free library card: residents of Allegheny County, residents of other Pennsylvania counties and other states who are employed within Allegheny County, and residents of other Pennsylvania counties who present an Access PA card. All other Pennsylvania residents and out-of-state residents are eligible for a library card if they provide sufficient identification and pay a $10.00 fee.
Where can I use my library card?
Library cards can be used to check out materials at Moon Township Public Library and at any other Allegheny County library that is a participating member of the eiNetwork.
Do I have to present my library card every time I borrow materials?
All patrons, both adults and children, are expected to bring their library cards with them if they intend to utilize any of the library’s services. An individual who repeatedly ignores this expectation may be denied the privilege of using library services until they present their library card.
Can I let someone else use my library card?
Library cards are non-transferable. If you let someone else check out materials on your card, you are still responsible for the return of those materials and any fines or fees related to those materials.
Does my library card ever expire?
Library cards are valid for a 2 year period, with the exception of fee-based cards, which are valid for a 1 year period. A card can be renewed at the end of the period, as long as the address and phone number is verified and all outstanding charges (fines, damaged or lost books, etc.) are paid in full.
What should I do if my library card is lost or stolen?
If you lose your library card, you should notify the library as soon as possible and request card cancellation to eliminate the possibility of fraudulent use. The cost for replacement of a lost library card is $2.00.
