Absolutely Normal Chaos - Sharon Creech
Students who enjoyed Walk Two Moons will likely enjoy this sequel-of-sorts. The novel takes the form of a journal written by a girl for an English class.

All Creatures Great and Small - James Herriot
Herriot tells the amazing, funny and sad true tales of his life as a veterinarian in rural England.

An American Childhood - Annie Dillard
In short essays and stories, Dillard recounts growing up in Pittsburgh during the 1950s.

Antigone - Sophocles
This classic Greek tragedy features a young woman who can no longer sit quietly in the face of injustice.

A Fire in My Hands - Gary Soto
This book not only collects poems by Soto, it also includes commentary by, and an interview with, the author.

Hoops - Walter Dean Myers
This novel looks realistically at the dreams of a group of African-American boys hoping to pursue careers playing basketball.

Nectar in a Sieve - Kamala Markandaya
Cultures clash in this tale about the strain between people in rural and urban India.

Nemesis - Agatha Christie
Christie's famous detective Ms. Marple tackles another (initially) baffling case.

The Prince and the Pauper - Mark Twain
A royal child and a child of the streets trade places and learn a great deal about each other's world and perspective.

The Sea Wolf - Jack London
Thrilling adventures on the high seas occur when the narrator is taken hostage aboard a working ship.

The Talking Earth - Jean Craighead George
An adolescent Native American girl must decide whether to accept or reject what her culture says about nature and spirituality.

The View From Saturday - E.L. Konigsburg
A group of sixth grade students bond with their teacher as they compete in an academic bowl.

Woodsong - Gary Paulsen
While autobiographical, this book isn't a typical life story. Paulsen describes his experiences learning to train dogs and eventually running in the Iditarod dog sled race.
