The Darlington Memorial Library was given to the University of Pittsburgh by the daughters of William McCullogh Darlington. The collection has quite a number of materials pertaining to the French and Indian War and to the history of Western Pennsylvania and the Ohio Valley. Memorial Hall maintains a research library, which consists primarily of Civil War books donated by veterans when the hall opened in 1910. Recently, the library has been expanding to include volumes on other wars in which Allegheny County veterans have participated.

Primarily concerned with the genealogical records of Southwestern Pennsylvania -- meaning all that area which was the original Washington County, formed March 28, 1781. This is the land to the west of the Monongahela River, from the West Virginia line north, and west and south of the Ohio River to the Ohio line. Parts of the original Washington County are now all of Greene, and portions of Beaver and Allegheny Counties.
