Volunteering

Oh, I get by with a little help from my friends. . . (Beatles, 1967)

FLEX Program for CVHS Students

Contact the Library

We are ALWAYS in need of volunteers to work in the library even if it's an hour a week or an hour a month, we can use your help!

All volunteers need to be trained first. This includes learning where everything is, and the fundamentals of shelving. Once we get used to you and you get used to us, then you can move on to other tasks. These tasks vary depending on your interests and abilities. We have sitting jobs and more physically demanding jobs.

Who can volunteer?

Volunteers must be at least 14 years old and be able work independent of supervision.

When can you volunteer?

If you have been through our orientation you can stop in and help out.

You can check the volunteer board (to the right of the copier) for projects and / or programs that are occurring which you would like to help with.

We try to accommodate the time you want to volunteer; however, we do need to balance it with the needs of the library.

What do volunteers do?

Volunteers do many different tasks:

  • shelving and shelf reading,
  • processing new books,
  • pulling Requested Items or Holds for patrons,
  • moving donated books,
  • helping with summer reading programs,
  • helping with regular programs,
  • translating foreign language materials to aid in cataloging,
  • special projects: Updating labels, scanning paper documents to disk,
  • computer training,
  • moving stacks to make room for new materials, or to reflect usage,
  • looking for missing items,
  • pulling items to "weed" or help manage the collection size,
  • and more.

What about FLEX hours for CVHS?

If you are a student and need to get your FLEX hours we may be able to help.
Orientation does not count towards FLEX hours. Plus, you need to plan ahead, you can't come in the month before your hours are due and expect to get your 30 hours in, it is NOT possible.
